Western & Southern Open Serves Up Seamless Wi-Fi with Ruckus Networks and Powernet
Wireless solutions from Ruckus Networks help elevate the hospitality experience for fans, vendors and athletes
Sunnyvale, Calif.— October 10, 2018 – Ruckus Networks, an ARRIS company, and Powernet, a provider of voice, data, Wi-Fi and IT managed services, today announced that the Western & Southern Open chose their wireless solutions to provide continuous connectivity for its new South Building in the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati. As one of the premier tennis events in the U.S., the Western & Southern Open invested $25 million into upgrades for the 2018 season. With Ruckus technologies, they were able to enhance the overall experience for everyone in the center through premium Wi-Fi connectivity.
“It was important for us to look at the upgrades holistically in terms of elevating the hospitality experience through our first- class amenities—everything from enclosed box seating, unobstructed views of the matches and the Wi-Fi,” said Dick Clark, Director of Facilities and Operations, the Western & Southern Open. “We’ve worked with Ruckus Networks and Powernet for several years because we know their wireless solutions enable connectivity that is fast and reliable.”
Powernet designed the network for the Western & Southern Open using Ruckus technologies to provide a great connectivity experience. The installation included a combination of T300 series outdoor access points to handle the thousands of users and constant RF noise and interference, R710 indoor access points to tackle the multiple devices, bandwidth-hungry applications and busy spaces, and SmartZone™ scalable network controllers for converged wired-wireless management.

The Western & Southern Open required a whole new network to support a range of needs for its south building. This included blending the network of the new five-floor, 41,000-square-foot building with the existing wireless architecture of those structures already existing on the 20-acre complex, while making sure that everyone could access Wi-Fi in and out of the buildings. In addition to multiple networks for employees and guest Wi-Fi, the Western & Southern Open launched a new tournament app, which added to the complexity of the network demands.
The Ruckus network ensures that everyone can stay connected. This includes the more than 300 international journalists who cover the tournament and need fast Wi-Fi to instantly file stories and upload photos. Vendors won’t lose a sale with effortless transactions on their dedicated networks. And, the world doesn’t have to stop if there is a rain delay. Work can be done, calls can be made, and social commentary can be posted without worrying about all the activity taxing network bandwidth.
