Demystifying the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Stimulus Incentive Program for Healthcare

Stimulus Act Funds to Jumpstart Healthcare IT Spending

Introduction

Healthcare organizations have ever increasing challenges for generating revenues and controlling expenses, while providing a high level of quality care. With the bourgeoning cost of doing business as a healthcare provider and the expectations for an influx of new patients under the new healthcare legislation, providers must consider all means necessary to streamline business practices. More than ever before, clinics and hospitals must provide the most efficient environment possible for the practitioner to maintain the same quality of care for patients. One mechanism to improve the efficiency of practitioners is to leverage existing IT technologies. More fully, the federal government has also identified this opportunity and has developed an incentive program to jump start health IT (HIT) implementations through grants that will only be offered through a limited window of time.

The Recovery Act Stimulus package includes grants for hospitals and clinics to upgrade to electronic medical records. The upgrade includes enhancing or upgrading the network including the wireless component if necessary. The grants include up to $44,000 per physician and include additional bonuses for those physicians in certain geographic locations and over $63,000 for providers participating in certain programs.

Ruckus has put together a brief how-to guide on the basics of the program which will show you how to take advantage of this opportunity.

Note that these stimulus funds are only offered for a limited time after which certain hospitals and clinics will be penalized through their Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements if not in compliance with their electronic medical records. The incentive and money is there for this opportunity so we encourage you to take advantage of this program as soon as possible.
