Ruckus Wireless Awarded “Best Mobile Broadband Technology” at GSMA’s 2011 Mobile World Congress
Integrating Carrier-Class Wi-Fi into Cellular Networks the Big Buzz Among Operators Around the World Looking to Gain More Control While Addressing Coverage and Capacity Concerns
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona, 16 February 2011 – Ruckus Wireless™ today announced that its newly launched Mobile Wi-Fi Gateway, called the Ruckus WSG (wireless services gateway), was named “Best Mobile Broadband Technology” by the GSMA at this year’s Global Mobile Awards program. The prestigious awards program is part of the Mobile World Congress event taking place this week in Barcelona, Spain.
A new category of mobile Wi-Fi gateways, the Ruckus WSG was singled out among other big-named nominees such as Nokia Siemens, Huawei and Vodafone for its creative approach to solving some of the world’s pressing mobile coverage and capacity problems.
With the Ruckus WSG, operators can now cleanly integrate, handle and manage Wi-Fi traffic just as they do with their cellular data traffic, using the same core network systems already in place to provide more broadband capacity, coverage and a seamless experience to subscribers. Heretofore, operators have deployed Wi-Fi opportunistically and separately from their mobile cellular network. With the Ruckus WSG, Wi-Fi becomes another wireless onramp to operators’ wireless infrastructure that complements existing 3G and future 4G wireless access.
“Wi-Fi offload and the integration of Wi-Fi into the cellular core has been a major focus for operators around the world at this year’s show,” said Selina Lo, president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless. “Our innovations in adaptive radio access technology when combined with an intelligent wireless services gateway represent a major leap forward for operators and their subscribers. We are honored that the GSMA agrees and has recognized these industry advances.”
The Ruckus Mobile Wi-Fi System helps solve how operators can quickly and affordably implement a heterogeneous network strategy to add reliable broadband bandwidth and wireless coverage in dense user environments where cellular network capacity isn’t enough. Ruckus-patented Wi-Fi innovations give mobile operators a complementary small cell strategy as they evolve their macro cellular networks to 4G/LTE.
“Smart phone users want faster, more ubiquitous and reliable connectivity while operators are looking to squeeze out every last bit of capacity from their cellular networks,” said Lo. “As a result, smarter Wi-Fi has quickly taken on a more strategic role as part of the overall mobile network infrastructure. Ultimately users simply want the fastest and most reliable wireless connection they can get. Now operators can give it to them as part of a unified and seamless service offering.”
Ruckus Mobile Internet System Gives Wi-Fi New Role in Alleviating 3G Pressures
The Ruckus Mobile Wi-Fi portfolio features a new Wireless Services Gateway (WSG), the industry’s first mobile Wi-Fi gateway that acts as a central point of control for Smart Wi-Fi access points while enabling seamless service integration with the mobile core. Ruckus has also extended its patented BeamFlex smart antenna and Smart Mesh backhaul technologies to enable broad deployment of multi-access, small cell base stations in the future. The Ruckus Mobile Wi-Fi solution is the ideal foundation for operators looking to:
- increase the reliability of unlicensed spectrum Wi-Fi services;
- add coverage and capacity at the lowest possible cost;
- integrate Wi-Fi with cellular core services over standard 3GPP interfaces;
- simplify the subscriber experience with auto-provisioning of Wi-Fi client devices;
- leverage Smart Wi-Fi to supply cost effective backhaul for future microcell services; and
- enable transparent roaming between Wi-Fi and 3G/4G networks in the future.
The new Ruckus Mobile Wi-Fi system is on display at the Ruckus Wireless stand (Hall Two: 2F-37) at the Mobile World Congress Conference and Exhibition, taking place this week.
