Company Sees Stronger Than Expected Demand for In-Home Wireless IPTV Distribution in Europe and Asia Pacific, Opens R&D Center in Tapei, Promotes Former VP of EMEA to Head Worldwide Sales Efforts
SUNNYVALE, CA, September 5, 2006 – Ruckus Wireless, an innovator in next-generation smart Wi-Fi technology, today announced the appointment of Mark Mitchell, former vice president of sales for Juniper Networks, to vice president of sales covering the EMEA region.
Mitchell, who has 20 years of sales and channel development experience, will report to Rob Mustarde, who has been promoted to vice president of worldwide sales. Mustarde, who is credited with many of Ruckus' earlier successes in the European and Asian markets, will now oversee all of Ruckus' global sales and partner activities. He will work out of the company's headquarters in Silicon Valley.
Ruckus Wireless also announced the opening of a new R&D center in Tapei, Taiwan, where the company's software engineering team will continue to innovate next generation Wi-Fi technology.
Mitchell will focus on scaling EMEA operations to support major in-country telecom providers rolling out its MediaFlex system, as well as striking new agreements with national operators throughout the region.
Since the introduction of the Ruckus MediaFlex system, the company has engaged in trials with over 30 broadband providers throughout Europe and has inked deals with operators in Finland, Ireland, Slovenia, and Estonia that are rolling out production IPTV services using Ruckus to reliably extend their services into the home. Its system is also sold throughout France in Darty retail outlets.
Throughout his career, Mitchell has held executive positions with industry leaders like Marconi Communications, Siemens and GPT Communication Systems. He has strong relationships with global service providers and telecommunications equipment makers such as BT, Nortel, Ericsson and Motorola, and brings to Ruckus an accomplished track record of identifying and developing new channels and driving significant revenue increases. Mitchell will be based in the U.K.
"Mark joins us at an opportune time when the European and Asian markets are salivating for a way to reliably distribute broadband services wirelessly within the home," said Selina Lo, president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless. "The respect and reputation he carries in the industry, combined with his market and technology expertise, will help our solutions find their way to a greater number of consumers' homes throughout this explosive region."
According to S2 Data Corporation, Europe has the largest number of DSL subscribers in the world with over 47 million and is forecasted to grow to over 119 million by 2010. And by 2010, S2 Data Corporation estimates there will be over 19 million IPTV subscribers in the region making it one of fastest growing and largest IPTV markets in the world.
"In addition, our new R&D facility, located in the world's center for technology innovation, will give us greater strengths in advancing wireless technologies and continuing to deliver new capabilities previously thought impossible – like Wi-Fi that's reliable enough for streaming video," she concluded.
"Ruckus represents the perfect storm with the right technology at the right time for a market poised to explode," said Mitchell. "European operators are aggressively rolling out triple play services and need innovative new solutions to extend those services into the home. Major operators are already putting the MediaFlex system into the mass market with great success."
Ruckus has developed new technology that makes Wi-Fi stable enough to support the reliable transmission of digital voice, video and data around the home, despite the constantly changing RF environment that is continually affected by motion, cordless phones, microwave ovens, neighboring networks and countless other sources of interference. To do this, Ruckus developed state-of-the art smart antenna techniques to powerfully direct Wi-Fi signals to end devices and automatically steer the signals around sources of interference.
Ruckus has gained significant traction in bringing its smart Wi-Fi system into consumers' homes around the world. Since first introducing its MediaFlex product in September 2005, the company has signed a number of broadband providers in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America to bundle the Ruckus system with their respective broadband "triple play" services. Additionally, the Ruckus smart Wi-Fi system is currently in trials with nearly 75 domestic and international providers. The company is also working with a variety of set top box makers and consumer electronics manufactures on the integration of Ruckus technology into their respective systems.
