Provide a world-class Wi-Fi experience in the heart of Silicon Valley by deploying a high-capacity reliable outdoor Wi-Fi network in the 10th largest city in the United States.

Wickedly Fast Wi-Fi in the City of San Jose, Convention Center, and Airport

When the City of San Jose set out to look for a new Wi-Fi network, officials were hesitant and somewhat pessimistic about finding a solution that would be cost effective, reliable and provide for a "Capital of Silicon Valley" user experience.

City officials had a vision, with the onset of changing demands for data consumption including the advent of Netflix, Hulu and YouTube plus the added HD option – they wanted to control a high-quality user experience, but they didn't have the expertise in house. This is why they sought out quality private sector partners, and after testing a variety of industry offerings, they decided to go with SmartWAVE Technologies and Ruckus Wireless.

After successfully deploying an outdoor wireless network in the City of San Jose, the city expanded its partnership with Ruckus to include the Mineta San Jose International Airport and also the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

Finding a way to better streamline the traditional wireless LAN Deployment and management model by leveraging the cloud.

Innovative National Private Cloud Allows Central Control of Multiple WLANS

Using the Ruckus SmartCell Gateway 200 (SCG) as its foundation, Deep Blue Communications, a national managed Wi-Fi Service provider, has transformed its business model from a traditional value-added reseller into a full-fledged managed service provider. The company has selected and is the first to deploy the Ruckus SCG to deliver private cloud managed wireless LAN services to a range of customers in different vertical markets.

Designed specifically for carrier-class deployments, Ruckus SCG obviates the need for on-site WLAN controllers. With the SCG, Deep Blue which specializes in the hospitality, retail and public venue markets, is better able to serve multiple clients from a single platform with full active/active redundancy for maximum uptime.

Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi access points are shipped to customers for installation requiring little to no effort, once installed the access points automatically connect to the managed SCG and are dynamically configured with the requisite settings for each site. “The combination of simplified managed and streamlined deployment with the best Wi-Fi access points on site is a powerful combination that today is unmatched within the industry” Brian Espian, President and CEO of Deep Blue said.

Design, deploy and launch an advanced W-Fi service that delivers strong signal strength, the ability to adapt to environmental changes, high data rates and reliable connectivity within high-capacity outdoor public areas.

Smarter Wi-Fi Goes Live In The City By The Bay

With the goal of being one of the country’s most connected cities, the City of San Francisco wanted to build and deliver a world-class Wi-Fi service along the World Famous Market Street Corridor, one of the most heavily foot-trafficked thoroughfares in the world.

The Smart Wi-Fi service would be based on world-class, patented W-Fi technology with the ability to not only deliver free and pervasive high speed public access, it would also serve as a foundation as a reliable wireless utility for future services. So the City of San Francisco turned to Ruckus Wireless.

The public-private partnership between San Francisco’s Department of Technology and Ruckus teamed technical staff from the City and Ruckus to design, build, deploy and launch such a Wi-Fi service using three-stream, dual-band 802.11n Ruckus ZoneFlex 7782-S access points mounted on traffic poles along Market Street, with all the access points being managed centrally through redundant SmartCell Gateway (SCG) wireless LAN controllers.

With a reliable, pervasive and high-speed Smart Wi-Fi service now in place, now millions of residents, visitors and businesses can connect to essential online products and services, and the City has in place a scalable and reliable wireless infrastructure that it can easily expand and leverage to offer a myriad of electronic services that spur economic growth and more efficient City services.

Find a single wireless LAN solution that could provide reliable connectivity, extended coverage and and centralized management across a challenging and changing RF environment within its vast warehousing and logistics operations worldwide.

Industrial Strength WI-Fi

A global logistics and warehousing company with operations in over 150 locations across 34 countries, Katoen Natie needed an industrial strength WI-Fi system that could support its vast and constantly changing warehouse operations where reliable wireless was not negotiable.

Used for scanning and tracking inventory, back office applications and other business-critical operation, the WI-Fi system needed to be adaptable to the challenging RF environment delivering the strongest signal strength to a number of low-powered handheld devices. Kateon also needed the WI-Fi system to be easily extended into areas where Ethernet cabling wasn't always available. Finally, the WLAN system needed to be easy to use and deploy with centralized management.

After evaluating numerous WLAN options, Katoen has standardized on the Ruckus ZoneFlex system, having deployed 1,500 Smart Wi-Fi access points accross its warehouses worldwide. The rest is history.

Providing coverage and capacity across the 19,000-seat arena, including locker rooms, luxury suites, concourses and back office areas

Stressful Wi-Fi

When you have a 19,000-seat arena that is home to one of the nation’s leading basketball teams, and plays host to world-class entertainers, and even plays host to the largest gathering of democrats in the United States, you’re going to want to make sure that your Wi-Fi works, and that it works well.

The Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina needed to update its existing Aruba infrastructure with a network of more dependable APs with extended coverage.

When Ruckus was presented with the opportunity to design a Wi-Fi infrastructure at the TWC arena, the greatest challenge came in addressing the enormous capacity requirements in the main seating areas of the arena.

The usual approach to supporting high-density environments is to deploy a large number of APs, but that can be counter productive. High-density deployments are all about interference management, and a key design criteria is to mount the APs — to the greatest extent possible — in an area where RF energy can only propagate in the intended direction. BeamFlex adaptive antenna technology has proven to be of great value when coupled with proper site selection.

The road ahead for the TWC arena includes looking at compelling applications that can be enabled over broadband infrastructure — including options to advertise special services to fans, information on where to buy various food items/merchandise, or even buy tickets to future events — all things which can be handled wirelessly with a smartphone or tablet device.
